Storage Consolidation Solutions - Windows Users of Raid Arrays, Storage Subsystems, NAS and SAN solutions

Disk Subsystems: Nexsan, Adaptec, Systemax, LSI, EMC, HP, Dell, IBM, etc.
Storage Networks: SAN, NAS, iSCSI SAN

If your Windows system or networks of Windows servers are already attached to a Raid controller, disk storage arrays or pools, storage subsystems or offloading disk and file management to storage networks (ie, NAS or SANs) then the value of disk I/O acceleration should be apparent. These solutions all work to consolidate and offload storage and disk I/O from the servers they serve.

How then can you make these systems faster? Run UpTempo on each of the Windows systems (or at least on the ones that generate high I/O loads) that are attached to the storage array or storage networks. UpTempo acts as a higher level of disk cache that sits on top of whatever caching your storage controllers or SAN devices may have in place. The result is that your servers become more efficient in their requests for data from storage resources and therefore you can get much more out of your storage investments. UpTempo uplifts all the disks that sit behind its sophisticated I/O caching engine. Since you already made the investment for higher end storage solutions let your systems use them to their full potential by installing UpTempo software.

Most systems are bottlenecked by I/O and the more tasks and the more disks you have running the more you can gain from UpTempo. UpTempo greatly improves performance for network and multi-user systems that require large multi-disk storage environments.

Single disk or a single user system - UpTempo can make your system faster.

Multiple disks or many users - UpTempo can make your system much faster!!

Storage arrays and SANs

These systems are designed to handle large capacities of data and to serve storage to many different users and applications. By nature they are disk I/O intensive. With these systems there more traffic and congestion are possible and therefore more opportunities exist for UpTempo to break the bottlenecks and accelerate the I/O.

There are a lot more opportunities to be efficient and overcome bottlenecks when UpTempo works across multiple users or a large number of disks. The greater the load the better UpTempo performs...

Fast backend I/O disk subsystems? UpTempo makes them more efficient - The faster the backend typically the greater the performance gain from UpTempo. UpTempo removes bottlenecks by efficiently managing the flow of I/O and optimizing accesses to your I/O subsystem. Therefore, your fast I/O and disk subsystems can run to their full potential.

RAID Implications

RAID disk sets offer data protection but are known to be slow, especially for write traffic. With UpTempo, systems gain the intelligence and ability to buffer many writes to optimally combine, order and stage them to minimize the flow of write traffic to disks. Only those writes that change data need to be written to disk, lessening the total workload. In addition, since writes can be buffered, ordered and optimally combined prior to metering them to disk, the read I/O rate also improves for RAID5 systems.

Microsoft Windows Servers as Filers

Windows servers can be dedicated to file sharing. File Shares (network accessible folders and files) are delivered to and accessed by many users over the LAN. It is a simple approach to sharing data and files unless of course everyone wants to get at the same info at the same time - that's when things slow to a crawl.

The NAS engine is dependent on fast access to the disk subsystem that contains all the file shares. Access to often used disk data can be significantly improved by utilizing UpTempo dedicated disk cache such that disk volumes read and write data is accelerated by the UpTempo caching mechanisms. When everyone wants to see the same file, it is a lot faster to service those reads from fast memory-based cache than having to go to the slow disks each time a request occurs.

Many NAS systems are maxed out and bottlenecked on disk I/O performance since they typically start small and grow fast - soon more users are sharing info, and a lot of multiple users and applications are concurrently trying to access file shares with each request generating a load of disk activity. Bottom line, file shares are storage intensive and ideal candidates for UpTempo's disk caching technology. UpTempo can greatly enhance performance and increase the scalability of the NAS system to handle even greater loads of user traffic by maximizing existing resource utilization.
  • Concurrent and multi-user access of file shares stress and bog down NAS disks
  • Performance often limits scalability
  • Beats the alterative of having to buy another NAS device just to add more performance
  • Enhances NAS resource utilization and delivers a better overall user experience
The Performance Problem: Many factors impact overall performance. However, the four fundamentals are: network, processor, memory and disk. Of these four, the most common performance bottleneck is disk input/output (I/O) access. Processors, networks and memory have advanced dramatically each year while disk I/O advances continue to greatly lag the industry. Disk performance now represents the major bottleneck to optimal system and application performance.

The Solution: Use DataCore's UpTempo to boost Disk I/O performance

When disk I/O bottlenecks limit system performance, other system resources wait idly by. By putting these resources to work, system performance is improved. UpTempo's powerful disk cache helps optimize system resource utilization by applying processor and memory resources to the I/O bottleneck problem.

The UpTempo block-level cache assesses your workload I/O patterns and optimizes the flow of I/O traffic between memory and disk locations. Inserted into the path of the I/O subsystem, it learns to cache the most active read/write disk I/O. With UpTempo enabled, the cache technology reduces context switching, enhances server response and results in a much more satisfying and productive user experience.
